Before I start my talk, I just want to tell you, I've been speaking at the Cancer Control Society convention for about 20 years. Believe it or not. And we really have a lot to thank. Lorraine Rosenthal. So let's give her a little appreciation. We want to continue this battle because I'm old enough to remember that it was a president by name of Richard M. Nixon. Some of you might remember him. There was supposed to be a war on cancer. Well, we've lost the war. Now, another 40 years later.
And Joe Biden, he's our current vice president, is doing the same thing. So it's up to us individually to really fight this war on cancer. And the way to fight it is not to treat it, but to prevent it. And that's what I'm going to be talking about. By the way, I have had my whole family here. My daughter Lorna and our two grandchildren. There is Lily and Ryan and my wife Gail. So it's kind of a family affair.
Anyway, here's some of the book I'm going to talk about today. It's called The Happiness Effect. And boy, do we need happiness in this country.
All you have to do is watch television or read a newspaper or magazine or listen to the radio and you see a parade of horribles yesterday morning on the way to work. They were talking about releasing some rapists. And Hafidh, a demonstration there. The two candidates for running for president. Both of them, about half the population, doesn't trust them. Everywhere in the world. There's some problems. So we need happiness. And you might say, well, what the hell is that? Got to do a thing about cancer. If you don't mind the vernacular. Well, there was a man by name of Norman Cousins, somebody you might remember, Dr. Norman Cousins from UCLA. He talked about and I think Dr. Tony O'Donnells said a tube about how laughter and happiness is one of the best medicines. Well, we've forgotten about that. We think only in terms of the parade of horribles. If it Lee if it bleeds, it leads. Well, what the habitus effect is all about something that you might have heard of before, but it kind of dropped out. It's called the positive effects of negative ions, which are negative ions. Negative ions are the things that make you feel great when you take a shower. Think about it when you take a shower. How do you feel? Anybody right. You feel energized, you feel kind of good mood, etc. That's because of the running water produces these negative ions. So also, of course,
