Thank you.

Well, I'm delighted to be here. And I'm so happy to follow Dr. Cole, because he did a wonderful job of preparing what I'm going to say today. He covered a lot of statistics and really did a great job. I thank him very much.

Here's a little bit more statistics, just giving us the basis as to why nutrition plays a part and what associations we know about diet and cancer.

Way back in 1977, Ernest Wynder , who was actually one of the finest cancer control researchers that we've known, saw what he called a preventive potential, meaning that things we did in our life; lifestyle, smoking, exercise, diet, these played a part as high as 60 percent for women and 40 percent for men.

Two other biostatisticians from England, which is where I'm originally from, in case you didn't guess, were and Pito and Doll they showed that in fact the range of a plausible diet and cancer link is as wide as 10 to 70 percent. And 35 percent is the number you may see bandied around a lot, and that's actually the median, which as we look at statistics, is the middle of the curve. And we do know that high fat diets and obesity are associated with certain cancers that appear to be hormonally related.

During the 15 years that I've worked, had the privilege of working with cancer patients. This began way back in 1985 at the wellness community, which at that time was a little yellow house in Santa Monica, I've been very privileged to learn from cancer patients. I myself have not been diagnosed. However, the very first time I went to the wellness community, I felt as if I was completely accepted and I was completely at home.

Nutrition & Cancer

And even though I had some reservations, I thought, well, what can I as somebody who hasn't been diagnosed offer? I was told of two things. First and foremost, that none of us know if we have cancer or not. And that most of us have pre-cancerous situations at all times. So I was no different. And the second thing that exactly as Dr. Cole mentioned, we are individuals, we're not statistics. And at that point, I said, well, I'm here. I've been drawn here. I don't know why, but I will do whatever I can to help to relieve unnecessary suffering. And wherever nutrition can play a part, I will be there. And to that end, I am here today. Over this period of time, what I've discovered is that when you take somebody who's been diagnosed, who's going through a real crisis of
