Does Sunshine Cause Skin Cancer | Melanoma from Sunlight | Dr. Jack Wolfson

Cardiologist Dr. Jack Wolfson explains the relationship between the sun and skin cancer (melanoma) Does sunshine increase melanoma risk? Of course, not and let me tell you why. I’m Dr. Jack Wolfson, board-certified cardiologist and the sun has been around for billions of years. Humans have been around for hundreds of thousands of years. We’ve evolved in the sun. Why would the sun cause use to have melanoma? Well, there is three types of skin cancer: there’s melanoma, there’s basal cell and squamous cell. And melanoma, of course, is the deadly one. The other two do not kill anyone. Now, if you get melanoma it is not coming from the sun and the literature is mixed on this issue but there’s a lot of different factors. But let’s just go back to common sense. Common sense tells us that the sun would not cause us cancer. That the sun prevents cancer. In fact, I wrote a blog post for The Truth About Cancer on 17 different cancers that your risk is reduced when you get adequate sun exposure. Now, our ancestors went to sleep with the sundown, awoke with the sunrise, and then they were in the sun naked all day long. So, we’re never naked, they were always naked, and they never had melanoma. Why, again, why would they get cancer from the power of the sun? So, melanoma is cancer that occurs in non-sun exposed areas very often, in between the toes, or a certain area of the back, even in the mouth where melanoma occurs. That’s obviously not from sunshine exposure. So, embrace the power of the sun. Get all the benefits of the sun. Be confident it doesn’t cause melanoma. Now as a cardiologist, it’s very important to get sunshine because we know that sunshine, the more sunshine you get, the lower your risk of heart disease. I’m asking you. What are you worried about? Are you worried about dying of heart disease, which kills 750,000 people in the United States every year? Or are you worried about melanoma, which kills a tiny fraction of that? 3,000. 5,000 people on a yearly basis. Worry about heart disease. Don’t worry about melanoma except in the fact of living the healthiest lifestyle. Not putting on all those toxic sunscreens that cause cancer. Embrace the power of the sun. Sunburn bad. Sunshine good. When you went on the Spring Break trip, as we all did from Chicago down to Florida, the Caribbean, and we all got sunburnt. That’s bad. Sunburn bad. Sunshine good. Embrace the power of the sun for your health today.
